The move makes them the first traditional sports team to enter mobile-game Esports landscape through the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang league with the rebranded PSG.RRQ squad. The French club hopes the move will bolster its presence in Asia, especially in Indonesia, which has an estimated 43m gamers.
PSG have been one of football’s biggest investors in the Esports industry in recent years, with this being the fifth title they have entered following the FIFA series, League of Legends, Rocket League and Dota 2. However, the club did withdraw from competitive League of Legends in 2017, citing concerns on the revenue sharing model.
“The arrival of PSG to the mobile gaming scene is a new milestone in our esports strategy,” said Fabien Allegre, PSG director of merchandising and brand diversification.
“Since 2016, mobile has become the preferred channel for game producers and distributors and the sector now represents half of the video game business. The club is a pioneer in this industry and it was the logical step to follow.”
