Speaking at an event arranged to announce a football partnership – this time with Conmebol, the South American football federation, Qatar Airways CEO Akbar al-Baker said that he was exploring “several options” for a possible deal with a Premier League outfit.
While he refused to delve into any specific details of a potential deal, an aide did admit that the airline was in “negotiations”. The business, which operates under the jurisdiction of the Qatari government, has made multiple moves into the football industry – though never into England’s top flight.
The airline has long been mooted as a potential naming rights partner for Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium. Between 2013 and 2017, the company was also the primary shirt sponsor of Spanish giants FC Barcelona, while Argentina’s Boca Juniors and Serie A side AS Roma both have ongoing shirt sponsorship deals in place with the airline.
In addition, Qatar Airways is the official airline for FIFA, world football’s governing body, with the 2022 World Cup taking place in the Asian country.
