New Thailand-based Asian Tour golf tournament the Royal’s Cup has secured sponsorship backing from a string of major car manufacturers including Toyota, Mitsubishi, Mazda, MG, and Isuzu.
The inaugural Royal’s Cup is taking place on March 12-15 at the Grand Prix Golf Club in Kanchanaburi, about three hours’ drive from Bangkok. The event offering a prize purse of US$400k is promoted by Grand Prix International. The outfit also runs the Bangkok International Motor Show.
Some of the car brands will offer vehicles as prizes for achievements such as hole-in-ones and albatross scores.
The Bangkok Post reported that Asian Tour commissioner and chief executive Cho Minn Thant said, “The impressive line-up of vehicles that will be offered as prizes for our members as well as the commitment shown by the various car makers for the Royal’s Cup 2020 is a strong testament to the appeal of professional golf in Thailand and the Asian Tour.”
Earlier this month, at the announcement of the venue for the tournament, Dr Prachin Eamlumnow, director, chairman and chief executive at Grand Prix International, said: “The golf tournament…will be held to honour His Majesty King Rama X and to celebrate the 50 years of [Grand Prix International] in business.
“It is also to promote professional Thai golf sport to be recognised internationally. We would like to provide it at an international standard. Therefore, we have chosen to work with the Asian Tour, a reputable organisation that is the official regional sanctioning body for professional golf in Asia.”
