Yoodo, the Axiata/Celcom-owned digital mobile service in Malaysia, has announced a partnership with The Pokémon Company to bring the first-ever official Pokémon Unite tournament to the country.
The Pokémon Unite Malaysia Open 2022 will feature a modest prize pool of US$20,000, but a great platform for Malaysian gamers. As of April 2022, Pokémon Unite boasted more than 70 million downloads worldwide across all the platforms on which the game is available.
The partnership was signed off by Head of Yoodo, Chow Tuck Mun. “We hope that the upcoming tournament will provide a platform for more Malaysian esports players to shine, furthering our dedication to supporting talents from the grassroots.”
For the Yoodo brand – whose USP is its customisability* – this also becomes a revenue driver/value-add mechanism as the telco will be introducing a Pokémon Unite data Add-On, scheduled for launch next month (August 2022). This plan augments Yoodo’s library of other gaming Add-Ons giving Yoodo users a 20GB boost of data when they need to game all day and night!
Pokémon Unite has been a worthy spin-off for the franchise, with the unique mechanics of the game making it unlike many of the other Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games in the market. Like any other Pokémon game, the main objective is to catch ‘em all, instead of just racking up kills.
In other Yoodo news, last month they appointed Jan Lee as a new brand lead reporting to Chow Tuck Mun, to drive the creative development of Yoodo’s “cheeky, bold and dynamic” brand initiatives.
